Did SID forks also come in 1" steerer?

Re:

I had Paul (Brodie) thread an unthreaded, brand new Marzocchi steel steerer tube for me, which tube I then had (the base aluminum shim to 1 and 1/8") shaved down to fit into a new, Ultimate RockShox crown (had to remove a couple thou off the shim) ... which was then heat/shrink press fit into the crown for a perfect interference fit by yet another infamous machinist (holds a Bonneville Salt Flats world speed record on a conventionally aspirated mid-century Triumph motorbike)...

Worked perfectly; but then ... had two world famous craftsmen/engineers helping me out with the machine work!

Some very interesting people here in Vancouver.

Mike - I had a 1" 98 SID w/o disc.tabs, but sold it for good money some years ago - now I got a really nice lightweigth steel frame and it needs a 1" fork - shouldn't have sold it - they did not appear often

you can combine Judy crown with a (modified) 98 SID - or change the steerer (at own risk) - check this out:

One word of caution, depending on the vintage and model of the bike you're trying to fit:

The press-on crown of the early 1" SID forks was sloped quite a bit, whereas the earlier bolt-on Judy crowns were more squared off. This meant that the SID crown had more clearance to the downtube. Depending on the frame, it may actually NEED that clearance. One of my ongoing projects has been an old Ritchey that came with a 1" early SID. I performed the bolt-on crown swap with late model SID lowers, only to discover that the adjustment knobs hit the downtube. Now I'm stuck trying to find some older uppers after all, or locate some sort of crown race with extra height, before I can ride the bike.

Not sure if it will help but you could use the lower profile judy adjusters (pre 97) which, assuming you are using judy internals might give you the clearance.

What headset are you using? Chris king do a crown race that offers greater clearance. I've got one in 1 1/8, maybe they did a 1 inch version too?

I'm using the modern SID internals, with modern air valve and remote lockout knob - so that's part of the problem. Though clearance is so tight, I'm not sure a different option would work anyway. Figured I might as well make it perform as well as possible, even though it "looks" retro.

Good news, however, is that you're correct! This thread prompted me to look at King's website again, right after I posted. They didn't offer the +5 baseplate (crown race) a few years ago in the 1" size, but they appear to now!

Placing order shortly...

Cool, glad you've got something sorted. I think a retro frame with modern bits, even if hidden like fork internals are the way to go. Progress is progress, but modern frames are all too generic and don't have the soul of a cool retro frame.

Let's be honest, a bike used back in the day was upgraded almost as soon as it was ridden, sometimes before, and as new shiny things came out, we saved, bought and fitted them.
