My girlfriend and I were watching ITV4's TdF with Gary Imlach and Chris Boardman. The latter was doing a little recce on his bike with a bit of commentary about the route.

She pondered what she was seeing for a moment and then said,

"How odd. He's got the face of a hobo and the body of an athlete!!"

C'mon, Chris - get a shave at least!!

Re:

TBH, he aint got the body of an athlete ... he's now a bit chunkier around the midriff than when he rode.

Havin said that, I'd still swap with him, I'm more lard arse than race snake.

I can't make my mind up with the Daniel guy who talks to the riders. He looks like he just doesn't fit in the cycling world (I dunno why just doesn't to me) but he seems a languages genius, and gets to speak with them all, so hats off to him

Re:

He has the body of an athlete in comparison to me, anyway!!

I don't know who the Daniel guy is - he looks like he's about to present a music festival or a teen programme etc.

What's happened to Phil Liggett and his La Redoute sidekick??

Does anyone watch Eurosport's coverage? I'm assured that Greg LeMond does a stint on it but I can't be arsed sitting for hours to catch a few minutes of the TdF Hero, as much as I would like to see him!

Daniel guy is Daniel Friebe, very well known cycling writer / journalist, wrote biography of Merckx, edits procycling etc etc

Re:

I tend watch it on eurosport for my sins, I've grown to prefer the commentary from Carlton Kirby and Sean Kelly.

The Greg LeMond sections are usually at the very start of the programme called 'extra', before they cut to the live coverage, plus you get to see Juan Antonio Flecha looking deeply uncomfortable in front of the camera! :D.

Matt

I usually prefer Eurosport although i sometime flick between the two to avoid the adverts. David Millar has some brilliant insights on itv4, he called the finale yesterday and also the way Froome got away on that final descent after making his rivals think he was just bashing mountains points.

Re:

Yup, I found Le Tour by LeMond on last night on eurosport at midnight which covered the day's events and had all the comments en route by the two great men (Kelly and LeMond!) themselves. That'll do me.

I believe Phil and Paul still do syndicated commentary but ITV decided to make their own. Although there's something comfy about listening to Phil and Paul, I have to say I don't miss Paul reading off script about the local landmarks and I haven't yet forgiven them turning a blind eye to Lance (and EPO before that).

I'm really enjoying David Millar's analysis though but Ned Boulting can get a bit overexcited at times. I thought David Millar was great on the Ride London Classic and pretty much called every attack before it happened. He really knows how the peleton works and more importantly conveys that to the listener.

To be fair to them, they have to remain impartial and concentrate on the facts and racing. Commenting on what was a hunch or rumour at that stage would have left them and ITV open to all sorts of litigation

It was more the "he wouldn't have doped after cancer" stance after there was overwhelming evidence and testimony (Tyler, Floyd etc) and the refusal to discuss doping in the peleton unless they were forced (e.g. Festina) and that was only to talk about the mistreatment of riders rather than the doping itself.

To be fair Phil did round on "convicted" dopers like Virenque, but only because he denied it so much even when the whole team confessed and said he was on the juice. They didn't seem to mind Vino though.
