Deore II Groupset (1989)

Any feedback on this as a groupset please?

I have used the Deore II Thumbies and the brake levers before on old bikes, but have the opportunity to pick up a whole Deore II groupset (from 1989 I think?) which has probably seen less then 10 miles of (road) riding in it's life. Not NOS... but not far off.

I will be using it on my Dyna Tech of 1991 vintage, so it would pre-date the bike slightly... but surely there would be no major problems with this? Maybe the front mech size/bottom/top pull issue? Anything else I need to consider.

Thanks.

Re:

Basically Deore DX predecessor. made in 1989 only.

Nice solid stuff IMO

Re:

Similar feedback here... full (and well used, but well maintained) groupset on a bike I bought last year. I've used it regularly and it has functioned pretty much perfectly off road since.
I'd go so far as to say I'd pick up great condition stuff while it's still reasonable prices, as I'd happily run on other bikes.

Re:

As it only appeared in 89 (actually its pretty much only the mech face plates that were different to later DX) ...anyway...it is somewhat more collectable, read potentially more valuable, than the later DX. Anyone with an 89 bike wanting period perfect will pay money. You may be better off sticking it away (at least the mechs) and trying to find mint DX for your build. Mint and NOS DX is not hard to find and still quite cheap.

Just my view. :D

It's not a Fabergé egg, I can't see Fiona Bruce getting all hot under the collar about it. :p

Totally see you point here Ant. While the MT-62 Deore groupset isn't a Faberge egg, it is the first year that XT had a companion 7 speed groupset. It's not rare, but unusual enough to warrant refraining from grinding it to a paste on a winter hack bike.

As you say DX is much more available and, from a structural point of view, almost identical.

Deore thumbies and cranks are all MT-62 though, so they effectively had a three year production life between 1989 and 1992, possibly 93 for the cranks.
Which means there are a few more of them about than the single year production MT-62 mechs.

I do like the 'single year' Shimano groupsets and components.

Deore MT-60, Deore MT-62, DX M-075 RF+, LX M560, Exage LT and ES, (most of the 1993 groupsets), STX SE etc...

Haha... Love the Fabergé egg analogy, and thanks for everyone's feedback.

Well I got the Groupo, although not in hand yet.

I'll hopefully pick it up tomorrow, otherwise it will be another week before I get it as I'm away on business next week.

If anyone did want that 'Fabergé' egg derailleur in their collection I could be interested in a swap on both derailleurs as ideally i wanted XT.

I'll post up some pictures when I get it so you can see what great condition it's in. Honestly... If its done 10 miles i'd be surprised.

Thanks again.
