Dental tourism

Now, if you've ever met me, you might notice that my dental health isn't all it could be.

I know I need loads of work, but I am worried about the price.

Just as a thought, would any of you consider dental tourism? Has anyone done it? How did you do?

planning on taking the boat across the channel?

I take it even NHS dentists in the UK would be too expensive? We're with an NHS one in Chaddesden who is still taking on patients, I believe.

Find a dental hospital, find their STUDENT register ( avoid regular reception like the plague ) and tell them it hurts. Ask to register with a student, lie back and enjoy ££LOADS££ of free work.

An old friend of mine used to wait until he was in pain (or fake it a bit) and go to A&E where his issues would be sorted at the hospital, for no fee..

By the sound of your query though, Chris, sounds like more general treatment (more on the cosmetic side?) than toothaches (teethache?) or abscesses and the like.

I looked into it very seriously.

It is certainly a viable option and depending on the work required and your own vanity when it comes to results, it is well worth looking into. By that I mean the services on offer in Hungary were far higher standard than those available through the NHS, and far cheaper than going private in this country.

In this country for cosmetic fillings and a good cosmetic crown at the front of my mouth (following a MTB face plant) I was looking at around £2k private in this country. In eastern Europe I was looking at £800 including a weeks stay in a hotel.

When it came down to it though, I managed to find a good local NHS dentist, who also did private work. She talked me through the process, explained that most private dentists are NHS trained any way, showed me the types of crowns available. (Basic cosmetic crowns are available on the NHS for damage to the front teeth, any non visible teeth get metal lump stuff). In the end I was satisfied that the work would be of good quality and cosmetically acceptable. The cost was the top tier NHS band which equates to £200.

So in summary, my advice, don't rule out the NHS. But by all means consider the tourist route.

The student route is a good route to take - they are supervised, they need to learn and they can take their time to get it right, it is checked by a senior at the end most of the time... otherwise NHS all the way.

i loved going to the dentist in brazil, very good looking dentist over there and the asstiant too ;). they couldent belive the state of my teeth and the fact i come from the so called first world. considerd going to hungury last year but managed to find a nhs dentist last min.

..like suggested even here I went the university clinic way for general stuff..takes longer because of students(supervised)but the cost is a lot lower.
Anything more like implants etc..forget it or remortgage your house ! Lot of people here go the poland route.
