Delta brakes non-campy!

Isn't what set the Delta's apart is that there is no "roller cam", but a pure linkage mechanism?

The Delta refers to the shape, although there's indeed a big difference in operation between levers on a high pivot and wedge on a high pivot.
Did campag establish the name?

I think they were sold as a tt-specific component, as in @jim haseltine s experience, so the weight, setup complexity and poor performance were offset by the smooth exterior and ... er ... compact shape?

The WTB roller cam had different profiled cams, so at least offered some different lever feel. I suspect trail and error though:



My understanding is that the others, especially Campag Delta could not offer this soft tuning. Perhaps the Shimano AX?

From my memory no, the Deltas where not sold to the TT (UK) specific as dedicated units.

A road brake. I remember doing chain gangs BITD and the hopefuls had them. It was the pro mechanics that hated the lack of easy service dangling from a following car / service vehicle. Plenty of pro riders seemed to manage with them on the road though.

Personally think we are on the old nugget, a very enclosed system to function sufficiently well. Little space to get the brake bridge / fork length or play around with rim width or different levers - just IMHO.

EDIT: Oh .... and how to get the pads hit the rim at the same time. The things internals must undoubtably must be crystal clean, and lubricated.

I found the Weinmann delta was tough to set up.
No on-th-road experience.
Still have them tho', and the bike to wear them.

Don't all these type of cam brakes suffer from the same problem of set-up?

Like you need to pull to the inner cable vertically, get the right length, clip it very short, but there is a wheel in the way....

.... so you take the wheel out to set up the braking system

And you wonder why the industry is in tatters.

Campag deltas were used in road races by quite a lot of people but I don't remember seeing many outside of the pro peloton. Modolos were quite popular in time trialling circles for a while while the Weinmanns were rare - I think the ones I set up were the only ones I ever saw other than at trade shows. I've spent most of the evening trying to remember whose bike they were on but that information has been lost over 40 years. The semi-automatic (joke) adjusters on the Weinmann brakes certainly made the task easier, as did a lightly tensioned 3rd hand tool.

I just stumbled across a couple of models of Delta brake i was unfamiliar with on ebay... and the old favourites obvs.

I imagine many were made in response to the beauty, cost and sculptural quality of the campagnolo delta - which came in 3 and 5- lever versions.

I also imagine they were as annoying to set up and as disappointing in performance.

I've onlyset up campag and shimano ax roller cam, anyone familiar with the others in action?

Are what you are refering to as a lever, do you mean is a pivot?
