deep cup headsets...?

So, it seems that I've ovalised the headtube on trusty mid-nineties GT Karakoram - the peaks ride a week and a bit ago may have been the feather that broke the proverbial camels back...

Anyone got any experience of successfully using a deep insertion headset to get by when this has happened? TBH it may well be time to buy another old frame on ebay/from here for less than the cost buying such a headset, but thought I'd ask... Currently the top cup rocks quite a lot in the frame when I apply the front brake.

any thoughts and experiences welcome along with suggestions for a cheap headset with a deep top cup, if it seems this might be the solution...

I've got an lts3000 frame..put a hope headset in which seemed very loose...so tried the pig which seems tight so might be the hope headset but the pig has extra deep steel lower cup.

it's definitely the top cup flopping in the head tube and not lose h/set? The lower race takes more force so that surprises me. I wonder if it is worth trying a metal filler such as jbweld.

Never managed to ovalise a headtube before

i'd look for issues elsewhere such as mentioned above

Just actually read your original post and what they said... afaik it's the bottom that gets stretched if at all so check bearings and adjustment.
But I could pull the the hope bottom cup out out the lts by hand...and it went into the other frame a bit easy so maybe my bottom cups a wrongun

Headset's loose (which may have helped cause the problem), but top cup wobbles in the frame - it's OK side to side, but you can feel it moving against your fingers if you put them around the front and back of the head-tube.

I guess because it's been loose, the steerer tube has wobbled off line, and caused unusual wear?

I bet you have a loose top coup. Not an ovalized steerer tube and loose cone.

I had a ti frame (actually still have it) and I found that some headsets were a little easy to fit. Luckily someone on here had a few and sent me them all to try. Eventually found a couple that fitted nicely. Have you got access to any other headsets to try out? I found that Chris kings were the loosest but a token and woodman fitted well. Didn't have a hope at the time so can't comment on one of them but the cups used weren't any longer than others iirc, just fitted better.

Coukd it be the cup that is ovalised, can you fit cup after rotating it 90 degrees.

Remove cup and measure head tube using vernier calliper to determine if it is the frame., or cup as that may be easier.
