Decal Protection 2020

Hi all,

Spent time searching and found lots of threads with the same advice (heli tape or similar, lacquer spray) and just want to check in as I've just had my frame powder coated (video here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CI-1uzXAunO/) and have started installing Gil's decals.

Must say, Gil's decals are extremely high quality. Very pleased I am however concerned about adhesion on the very fine/thin aspects of the lettering as below.

The frame has no wax on it whatsoever and was powder coated days ago. So the finish is perfect.

Lacquer spray is out for me, I think, as I don't want to spray the entire frame (I'd mess it up). Can you just spray PART of the frame and have it not be noticeable?

Heli tape (or something similar) seems like an option but all I can find is 8 mil thick plastic like this:

Which seems overly thick for what I need. Heli tape is even thicker, no?

Hycote do a small tube of laquer with a very small brush. I just painted around the edge of my decals to prevent them peeling up. The smaller decals I completed painted over, you couldn't tell...

It's a spray can not a tube and I don't see its available in the USA, surely I can find something similar.

Do you just spray into a small tube and then use a brush to apply?

So very kind of you to offer! I can't find it in the US but this appears to be similar and I can get it today:

Duplicolor is a very well established brand. I like that this is also in a pen form, will allow me to hit areas more precisely than a brush, methinks.

What do you think?

Another option to consider, Gil can cut seriously thin clear panels of polycarb, just needs measurements.. he did a whole batch for me a while back to protect some old graphics that had lost their old protective layer and they worked perfectly.

Mind you have to apply them using the wet method.. :xmas-big-grin:

Helpful suggestion, thanks! I may do that in the future. Will be trying this lacquer pen thing soon and will report my findings.

Glad you got sorted! I've painted it over small handlebar decals, stems etc. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results!
