Dawes ID

Guys at Dawes are saying based on components its mid to late 70's? Going to check again for serial tonight. Looks like its had a lick of paint so maybe serial tucked away.

Re:

I've read so much Dawes info over the years that now I'm overloaded and can't remember half of it! I think that particular head badge was for the Dawes Double Blue, but, I don't think they were available in black. Does it look like its been repainted?

Re:

Definitely been painted. With a brush by the looks of it. Noticed some traces of yellow paint - primer/undercoat maybe?

The only thing late 70s about that is the back light. For a bike with centre pull brakes and high flange hubs (i.e. a reasonably good spec) to have a cottered single chainset I would say it's a good bit older than that. The handlebar stem is an older type too.

Have a look through the Dawes catalogues here http://veterancycleclublibrary.org.uk/l ... p?items=96

Re:

Thanks for that. Not sure if the rear wheel is original but looks like it can be flipped to single speed. The guy I got the bike from said his uncle used it as a track bike. I wasn't sure bit I presumed track bikes don't have breaks?

Re:

Unfortunately, the frame numbers won't tell you much. They were pretty random, and then what they had were destroyed in a fire. Its more likely late 50s early 60s. I'd do some google searches on the Double Blue. Matching the components may help but they tended to use some items across the range. You might find a date on the back of the brake calipers.
