Dave Yates Vulcan---Built.

Re:

Cheers chaps.

Spec...and my train of thought so far,

Mavic would be cool, but where do I find good condition cranks, rings, rear mech and front mech, and matching hubs...? If anyone has these items hidden away, I would love to hear from you...?

Campag I think would feel a little too much like the Roberts Stratos.

Suntour, I have a group with wheels built and have seriously contemplated using it for this build, but after some serious thought and with another project in the wings I think I will hold the Suntour back for the next project. the reason will become apparent when I post up the build thread.

I have thought about running some Egg rings, but where do I find them...?

Shimano I guess would be the obvious choice, as it is easily bought and easily replaced, and given the age of the bike, it does boarder on things like, clipless pedals or toeclips and straps, thumbshifters or STI units..?

I almost don't want to spec XTR, my reason for this is not so much cost and availability, but more that this model just (and by a small margin) pre dates the D.O.N.K.I.S N.O.B, which was to become the flagship frame which was also displayed around the shows with the then new XTR component set.

I guess a road tube 653 E-Stay would suit XT well, I would feel I would let the frame quality down a little by spec'ing DX if im honest.

So in the event of not being able to buy a Mavic Group with Egg Rings, the Question remains Black or Silver, Toe Clips and Straps or Clipless, Rapid Fire or Thumbies....?

I could for Nostalgia do what so many of us did when waiting for new supplies of Shimanos Revered STI units to become available, and that's Run the XT thumbshifters underneath the handlebar....? (not overly efficient but of its time on the race circuit back then).

To be different Suntour MD stuff would be cool - failing that you can't go wrong with either the m900 route or silver XT groupo with back rings.

Dark anno rims either way.

MD XC Pro were my initial thoughts. I'd keep it bright.

It is very, very beautiful though.

Patience or spending a lot are the only choices, it's taken me 4 years to amass most of a group, I don't currently have a frameset for it but the faff of getting it together means I'm keeping it! You could go for an MB Zip style mix and match grouppo using the cranks and Shimano for the rest?

Agreed on the Campag.

XT with the previously mentioned DA mechs and hubs maybe - like the P series bikes were specced?

I don't mind waiting, but I have had this frame a very long time, it would be nice to get it assembled, I don't even mind tatty Mavic that needs work, if anyone wanted to part with it or swop with it, im sure I have some nice bits and pieces to trade....(lovely Cannondale frame and fork airbrushed etc....all mint, other frames kicking about, old marins muddy foxs, cannondales with headset and matching peperoni forks etc etc, all that could be dealt for a few tired mavic parts..............?????

Would be nice to have a little less Shimano for sure.

Was always going to happen mate :)

How can it not with that frame!

I would live to see a mavic build, I've thought about it myself a few times but finding the stuff is a pain in the butt :|

When it's finished we should get some photos of the two of them together :?

Re:

Better still I'll bring along the other Yates that's in the pipeline, could be interesting ;)

Very special this, is it a repaint of the original colour scheme?
All black XT 730 with white Turbo and Araya RM20

I have had it for a very long time, it was the original colour before it went back to be refinished for the original owners wife and this was carried out by Carlton Reid, (although not to my taste or my wifes if im honest) Part of the reason to refinish the second part to ensure no corrosion before progress give the wife will be aboard, im happy to say that due to the lack of use his wife gave it, the tubes whilst scratched had no dents or corrosion inside or out (which was a worry given its 653), it was a lovely straight canvas to work with, unlike my previous E-Stay Build.

The Colour scheme predates that of the D.O.N.I.K.S N.O.B by a small margin, the main differences being the amount of colours used in the fade and this had candy whilst the DN was more metallic.
