Dave Yates Vulcan---Built.

Re:

Cheers for the comments chaps.

The easy route would have been Shimano Deore Xt for sure, then I got to looking at bikes I have built, I guess the Roberts Stratos with Campag, is the nearest direct comparison, so a quirky Mavic build seemed like a good idea, then looking at the skinny Reynolds 653 road tubeset opened up some ideas but I guess the main influence for it were Race bikes by Pro riders like Rowntree and Murrell, using a lot of Road Bias Components on this tubeset seemed to make a lot of sense after looking at some Pro level choices bitd.

I have a lot of members to thank for help in finding it all, Pete for the Shifters which came from the U.S, Roly for pointing out the French website for the Wheels and supplying the 2mm cables. Brakes, saddle, brake blocks all came from friends on here, Gio for the headset.

Chris Did a great Job in refinishing the seatpost, And Dan for the Bar and Stem combo, which really is a lovely addition.

The wheels were complete, but needed rebuilding, the hubs are a quality units, but all the bearings were replaced, one new cone needed, I thought it might be nice to build a radial front wheel and could get away with it given they are 36 hole.

I did have some concerns ref the gearing, but the block and the shifter choice made it viable, the chainring size would have been a pain if the rings were oval but thankfully they are round. I did and am trying to source a set of Bell Egg rings, if these came up I would drop the outer ring size by a couple and then use a straight through block. I was glad the rings were round at this size, the front mech will make the reach as is without issue but if I had used the mountain bike front mech, the longer cage would fowl the tyre given just how short the rear chainstays really are, finding the front mech pictured was a god send for this frame come the end.

In comparison to the Roberts Stratos, the rear stays on the Stratos are like a barge....lol.

(Pictured Below, Rowntrees Race bike, Notice the first picture both friction shifters being run underbar, in the second picture the right thumbshifter is above bar, I guess the reach was a stretch come the end.?)

Re:

I think the handle bar/stem combo should really have a nod to the person responsible for making it. I almost wanta have a decal that reads "Chambers" put on..? "SE" ...Simple..Elegant.

Re:

That's lovely! Real attention to detail as always Carl, superb! These bikes look so good left simple without the extravagance of sus forks or other things. A beautiful compliment to all your other British bikes!

Now if the thumbies are a bit of a stretch at the end of the travel then I seem to remember you could unscrew the thumbscrew and reposition the body of the thumbie on the mount ie rotate it round towards your body a few degrees

I never realised that Pete, I shall give it a go.

And thank you for your Wisdom with this one, greatly appreciated.

That's a real beauty. Love it.
I like the shifters mounted on underside.
Gives it a clean look. Are they comfortable to use like that?

Cheers Roy.

Shifters underside is a NOD to the old days here really. I don't think it would work so well indexed, but as a friction shifter they do work well, Smaller gear ratio helps, otherwise you would longer thumbs pushing the reach on the shifter

I remember us all doing this BITD when STI appeared!

Like the build with some interesting choices like the Pedersen brakes (I have 2 set of the Suntour variant and they stopped me and 20kg's of kit from 50 mph last summer so can vouch for the power) and those friction thumbies (I guess you are on the lookout for a set of the Mavic wishbone shifters there?

Carl.

There are a couple of things I would still like to do with the build.

The shifters were by choice for this build not for lack of Mavic, Mavic were offered by a member here, but sometimes an itch needs to be scratched.

Wow, Another jaw dropping build Carl. Nice touch with the Mavic

Thanks mate. I don't think the story is over with this build though, I would very much like to find some Egg rings in black, and tinker with the ratios a little, its just a shame im told they aren't being made any more.

I really think tyres are something that can be thought about a little more too, to get the most from it. Tyre clearance is ample, but as mentioned previously I really think it would cope and benefit from a 1.5 tyre, so would be nice to find either a Continental Baja, or Specialized hardpack or even a Fisher tyre, I guess trying to find NOS wont be easy.

The geometry has surprised me a little, from the bench to the build, without me thinking to measure up and take on board BB height, it came up bigger than I first expected, I should have measured up and never did, and it actually fits me, when I didn't expect it too. (school boy error on my part).

Straddle wire hangers could do with thinking about a little more, and after looking at it since assembly I almost think a flite saddle would look a little better especially with a skinnier set of tyres...?

I think its one of those bikes that will evolve over time for me, Trial and error, just wish I could find the Egg rings.
