Dangerous Parts?

Funnily enough although I must admit it wasn't that funny  I've just had a NOS Ringle stem handlebar clamp fall in half :? and I'd only tightened the bolts enough to hold the bar in place

Paranoid Parts

Speculation is a dangerous thing and scaremongering equally pointless - however, if I had parts that or do break I'd want to share the facts to allow others to check their equivalent parts/assess their risk.

For example - I have a Critical Racing stem I now look at with doubt - however I'd really like to see a picture or hear from people who broke theirs before I resign it to a glass cabinet.

The downside of this type of thread is that we all wind up with a shed full of 'paranoid parts' we don't trust, rightly or wrongly... so what's the way forward?

Would it be an idea (and legal) to draw up a list of retro parts known to have failed through user experience (not gossip)?

Dangerous parts

I think it would be legal to list all of the parts that were actually recalled by their manufacturers or distributors.

My Sugino Mighty cranks were forged and they broke like a pretzel. I was lucky enough to be on a stoplight, I just put my feet on the pedal an bang!, it was broken...

I remember when Race Face introduced the Turbine LP cranks, saying that it was light, but not "stupid light".

Anyway, every part of my hardtail have the purpose to take all the abuse of my 310 pounds. I will never put anything too light, but always strong parts.

Mr K

I'm not interested in rumoring up the board, and I'd never defame a company or product based on he-said she said crap, but I do have some experience in the bike industry from a past life, (I'm not Gary Helfrich or anything!) and some of these parts are creepy.

My Kooka story, to clarify...I ordered 4 sets for the shop, three broke (one was mine) and we purchased the 4th back from the customer to return it to Kooka as a precaution. As I recall, their custmer service was quite good.

Do you want to know more or do you just want the new guy to keep his pie-hole shut when this stuff comes up? I'm not looking to troll for heated responses, I like your threads too much to wreck that. I just don't want anyone to get hurt if I have some first hand experience that would prevent it. I swear I'm a glass is half full kind of guy! ;)

That kind of scares me. There's not a lot of documentation on many of those incidents to make that site very useful.

I've got nine sets of Race Face cranks. Even after having a non RF crank arm break once upon a time and seeing that broken arm, I still wouldn't use anything else.

Having never been a skinny person (15st - 210 lbs - 98kg) I choose components on their proven reliability, I don't have an aggressive riding style always ride light when I can. Perhaps I've been lucky over the years but I have not broken any components during a ride*, they always seem to wear out before they fail.

*One exception - bent some Manitou 4 forks when someone fell onto my bike while it was on the ground.

Parts fail.

The link posted by hollister shows components made by Race Face, Tioga, Colnago, Bullseye, Shimano, Grafton, Topline, Stronglight, Truvative, GT, Fox, Easton, Cannondale, Specialized.. and on, and on. Some steel frames, some aluminium. Do we all just stop riding on these manufacturers components now?

I guess this links in with the discussion about the Chi-Ti forks elsewhere on here. It is easy to post a pic of a component and say "these fail, don't ride 'em" but in reality the failiure rate is probably very small and whilst a healthy dose of 'respect' for lighter parts may be required, lets not get paranoid, if we stopped riding on every part that someone had broken in the past, we'd all be walking.

We also don't know the 'real' reason for the failiure of any given component. I've not ridden with anyone yet that uses a torque wrench to make sure that manufacturers tolerances are applied, but I have ridden with lots of people who have broken something and then given the LBS some b*llsh*t to make sure that they got it replaced under warranty.

cant see any problem with these retro cnc parts.

im still breaking, snapping modern bike parts, its all relivant. i had cooks cranks on for years, crashed jumped, bunked mates on the back seat etc, no problem, the first time i jumped a flight stairs, bent my profile ss cranks..

maybe just check things for hair line cracks etc before use.
