Cyclo-cross bikes??

snap, just got my crosser, only ridden on road, bit slower than a full on road bike. The position lends itself better as a commuter as the slightly more upright position gives you better view of the road ahead.

plus the brakes are better if you er on the larger size, like me.

I have been asking myself this question quite a bit recently.

I think you can see them two ways.

a) not as good as an MTB off road and not as quick as a road bike on road.

or

a) good enough for most stuff off road and faster paced than an mtb on the road.


I love cx bikes. I have found that they pretty much do everything I want to do on an mtb nowadays, but add challenges and remind you of skill and ability that have been somewhat usurped with the advancement of mtb technology. And they get allow me to do nice 2 or 3 hrs loops with a mix of road and off road without getting drudged down lugging an mtb back on the road for ten miles after the hills have called.

They clearly aren't that great for 'proper' off road riding, decending on rocky stuff isn't any fun, and in fact hardpack chalk/ rock/ stones isn't great either, but it is a challenge and that has it's own rewards. I find mine fine for my local loops and there is an incredible feeling of satisfaction overtaking a five incher off road on what is essentially a 1970's racer.


Love em. Get one. It's the perfect all rounder. I literally never choose the mtb over it any more. :roll:

The one thing I would strongly recommend is, if not disc, to get some travel agents and put v's on it. Way way better than cantis at stopping you in traffic. In fact they seem to be better than the v's on v specific levers without the supposed need for the cable pull adjustment.

i just changed my pads to some old school red ritchey pads, more than enough power to stop my 15 stone . annoyingly my fork is disc compatible but the hub isn't may swap the hub over and get a avid bb7 (?) that works with drop levers, but will see how these go in the oop.

I had some of those road calipers and discs on a cx bike. were very good. But tbh, i think these v's with travel agents work as well with the sti levers. I did like the discs though.

I really like the salsa's, and was going to get one but think I will be going down the custom built bob jackson route instead.

The Cotic did indeed look amazing last year at the show. I heard a rumour it was a shelved project. That'd be a real shame as it would sell bucket loads in the UK. Wasn't even that heavy given it was steel. My steel Lemond was similarly nice but weighed too much.

Best looking bikes IMO. I ride one to work everyday and occasionally off road with the missus :shock: I currently have road tires and mud guards fitted for a faster winter commute.
