Cycling can be thirsty work for two!... "Swallow" Tandem!

It's an odd design because it's the equivalent of having a seatpost permanently fitted that has a lot of lay back.

I wonder how that affects the pedalling geometry to have the hip joints further back than usual? Possibly it doesn't make a great deal if difference, although I have used bike fit calculators in the past that suggest there is an optimum saddle position.

I presume the primary intent is to shorten the wheelbase, either for better handling, or to make transportation and storage easier.
 
I think a lot depends on your leg lenght.
In size 57 extra degree of ST angle translates into about 2cm. If the ST starts at a sharp angle, this is just a way to correct it back to something more relaxed. If you run something like a Brooks with extra short effective rails, a permanent 4cm shift back might be just what the doctor ordered.

PS these guys clearly took hydration seriously!
