I'm very confident the computers calculated this exact scenario (heat/light projection - it's very basic optics) - I suspect the failure was in the humans assessing the data when faced with various people saying things like "but the building looks really cool", "it only gets warm over a very small area and for a short length of time", "if we change the design now it will cost £xM" etc.
Sadly common sense is nowhere near as common as it's name would suggest.
