CRANKS Sugino vs Shimano ??

OK so I have a Cannondale F2000, mostly factory XT but it has a Sugino crankset on it, how does this rate to say an XT crankset ? is a sugino more desirable? or more bling? :?

personally...i always preferred shimano. the sugino is possibly the original spec, but i think manufacturer's often did that to save money, as cranks (with rings) like sugino were typically cheaper than a nice pair of XT's

Yeah me too, or though they are quite nice, I was really wondering if it was worth taking them off and keeping them as I have the Dale for sale,

Just on another note - are you in Melbourne Merckx ?

From my personal experience Sugino is as good as Shimano, if not a tad better if they wanted to do so. The Ritchey Logic and the SunTour XC Pro cranks were made by Sugino - mentioned as a reference.

...and people are prepared to pay a lot more for good condition Ritchey Logics than any Shimano; and don't even mention NOS!

brisbane, but i have a brother in melbourne

I find that the Sugino ones tend not to have the wonky ring problem where it rubs the front mech. Both brands have pathetically soft chainrings compared to Stronglight, TA or Middleburn.

Sugino Mighty 900s are lighter and better finished than M900 XTR...and usually cheaper. Impels (which were fitted on many Konas) are IME as good as XT.

The only difference is that Sugino didn't blow millions on marketing and advertising.

Sugino had a much wider range of chainsets in the late 90s and M739 XT was very expensive. Trek used them heavily on all its brands.

Worth checking what rings it has many came with heavy steel ones, although so did most mid-spec Shimano's.

I bought a tatty £5 Impel chainset recently to restore and with new alloy rings they weigh 667g, lighter than XT and XTR ;) I don't know what material or manufacturing process was used but polishing them was incredibly hard work!
