crank woes

Trying to remove cranks from early 1990s giant stone breaker to fix wobbley crank problem. Lefthand crank comes off OK with standard crank puller. But at driver side crank the crank puller is actually pushed out of the threads when the crank puller is turned. Clearly, there is something up with the crank threads. Is it worth trying a different crank puller? Is it worth hitting the chain wheel with a wooden mallet to try to get the cranks to settle back into the bottom bracket? The locking nut behind the chainwheel appears to be absent. Your thoughts please.

Re:

put the left side back on and go for a little cycle with the right bolt out and it should loosen itself off ;)

Not that I can see. Just the normal nut which came out without a problem. I'll try cycling close to home in case the drive side crank falls off while I'm out....
