crank lengths

I'm sure its been asked before. Would it make much diference going from a 170mm crank length to 175mm? It doesnt sound a lot but I'm not expert. :shock: :D

There are cases where it seems critical to bike fit... But there is no proof that the average person would notice a damn. I've certainly swapped between 170 and 175 bikes without noticing.
 
I suppose it depends on how tall/leg length you happen to be/have.

If you're average say around an 18/19" frame then 175 would be norm and it may not matter either way.
If you're shorter/short legs then it may matter, say down on 15/16" frames then 175 may just be that bit too long a stretch for your legs around the circle.
If you're taller/longer leg (34" actual+) up in the 20"+ region then 170 may well be well just not feel right are the circle just doesn't stretch the legs nicely and the stance is to narrow when standing up, here the 180 are creeping in at the other side of things.

If you are a professional then apparently 2.5mm is the sort of adjustment, but hence XTR was the only one to have that sort of accuracy.

(no evidence of any sort, but I don't like 170 cranks and I have 34" legs, A friend with similar does notice his 170 cranks though.)

I can tell you kids bike cranks that are shorter are a pin to ride, but good fun so crank length does something )
 
I have to say I notice if I ride a bike with 170mm cranks or shorter. Certainly if it's the first time for awhile, I feel it in my patella tendons. I don't notice it from 172.5mm though, so the 2.5mm jump seems too little for me to notice. I keep meaning to try 177.5mm or 180mm, but I've not found any cheap enough yet. It does suprise me sometimes how much difference what feels like insignificant adjustments can make, like adjusting your seat position.

I prefer 175mm but it's hard to explain why. I can get the saddle height right with 175 but have struggled with 170. At the same time I'm sure that 180mm would be too long and I suppose pedal cadence comes into the equation somewhere as well. One pro I read about reckons crank length doesn't matter at all :?

You have to remember to ignore the pro's, they probably have a completely different bike setup with a completely different body sat on it.

Only way to tell is to go for your normal long ride and see how it feels.


It's a bit like the 26/27.5/29er thing, different sizes work for different people better. I bet it's similar to the 16/20/24/26 sizes as children grow up, the taller you get and the length of your legs alter the wheels need to grow with it... For an average person riding an average bike in an average way.
There will always be exceptions and situations where moving from the standard works better.
Kids 20" and 24" island bike are great fun to ride, but I wouldn't want to do 20 miles on them.
