Cracked Crank

I'm curious about two aspects:-

a) How did it come to crack (over tightening or trauma)?
b) How were you proposing to fix it - weld ?

Cheers

HI, I found the crack on a bike I recently purchased, so either it was like that when it was shipped or it took a clout in transit; I know nothing about alloy welding so was wondering if it could be saved.

cheers

Sadly not weldable as it will incur further residual stress and cracks, not to mention that the welding process will weaken the parent metal and distort it too.

Fatigue cracking after 40 years of continual use is the reason.

It is in better shape than the new front dura ace hub I bought on ebay.
