Coverting bottom pull to top pull - a handy hint!

Devout Dirtbag
I have recently coverted a few mechs from bottom pull to top pull without the need for an adapter.

Having searched the internet I have not seen my method documented anywhere so thought I would share it with you all!

This will only work with Shimano bottom swing front mechs.

Here is how:

Basically the top pull and bottom mechs are identical apart from the section where you attach the cable.

Simply remove the two circlips that attach it and change the piece for one from a mech that pulls from the desired way.

I used a deore dual pull so now my retro XT is now bottom and top pull. I have also done this with an old LX so should work with most shimano mechs bottom swing mechs I would pressume.

I'll give it a go!

See photos below:

p.s I should mention you may have to use the original spring for the mech as they seem to have different fittings on some mechs. LX, Deore & XT seem to be the same but lower end Acera - X, Alivio etc are different.

Great tip - are you sure they are all identical apart from the arm though? Even between years?

Ah all is clear, I was trying to figure out how you had removed circlips etc from a FD-M737 mech and converted this to --> this

 I think you mean top swing here ;)
