It's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question really.

A new wheel with a couple of spokes damaged in a crash might only take 20 minutes.
A much abused, corroded or generally rubbish wheel with spokes snapping through fatigue or corrosion might take a couple of hours and require a complete respoke. Or a new rim.

It recently cost me £20 per wheel. I built them up and got them close, the lbs checked and adjusted as needed. Spokes shouldn't add too much.

for the record, this can be a nightmare, not meaning to question your ability but i've had situations when customers have done this and it has just made the job harder, no spoke prep, wound up all over the place, tension all over the place, up and down and nowhere near straight but "i've done most of it for you so it should be less than your wheel build charge" (which is £25 by the way)
That's fair comment. My abilities are limited but I have in the past taken a wheel I built to a shop and they didn't charge me as it was pretty darn close. As you say though, it depends on the wheel. My current lbs advised me to lace them up, not even tight and they would only charge for a true. A build cost there is £50 for a wheel.

Re:

I generally charge from £8.00 for a front wheel and from about £10 for a rear. Spoke replacement would add a couple of quid plus the cost of the spokes.

As JB666 says though, it depends on the state of the wheel when it comes into the workshop. Incorrectly laced wheels, corroded/seized/rounded nipples and stupidly tight freewheels always add to the fun factor.

Wheel builds in my workshop start at £25 too.

I haven't been to Failsworth for more than 15 years, that shop has not changed! As you say lovely bloke, but never had much to appeal to the Enthusiast, hard to believe he still makes a living.

Just get a spoke key .. it can be very therapeutic/highly frustrating ... depending on you turning it the right way or not ...!!

:) ... ... :( ... :) ... ... :x ... ... ...

If only the bikes inside were as old as the shop looks ha ha
Great photo

Sadly they are not. It's surprisingly big in side ... Well stocked too though of little interest To most on here I would imagine.
Shop looks exactly the same as in the pic above. even has original stained glass window panels ... I guess like many LBS they are just about keeping heads above water and can't afford fancy shop fronts.

Re:

Collected the rim earlier ...now Straight as an arrow, 3 spokes replaced ... Dealt with Chris who now does the day to day running of the shop ... Gerry's in his 80's but still pops in to tinker apparently.

I can honestly say service has been first class ... Chris is old school just like the shop front :-D
