Surely nobody could think Clarkson is cool? The question is whether you find him gloriously sad or just sad. Personally I think he veers between the two. He is very knowledgeable and can be quite amusing, but often a lack of self-discipline takes over and he becomes inane and boorish.
But it's the audience's fault for encouraging him. When Cream were at their height, Eric Clapton remarked that their audiences were so uncritical that he got huge applause for a few seconds of tuning up. At least he was unaffected enough to recognise that this was no way to discipline him to play well. The sadness of Clarkson is that he isn't unaffected.
