I have a chance to buy a pair of the original early 90's Continental Double Fighter tyres - not the modern all black ones - the ones with the grey centre section, black outer tread and brown walls.

What do people think of these? Any experience using them BITD? Any pics of a bike with them on? I can only find pics of the new all black ones on the Internet.

They would be NOS, and seem very light.

Thanks!

as i recall they are a flat-out XC race tyre. light, fast, not especially rad...

I want to use them for messing around town on and maybe towpath touring etc.

I've had a Double Fighter since about 1998, which I used as a rear tyre for racing when it was dry and the conditions allowed.
The fact it's still pretty much as new is a testament to how little opportunity I've had to use it over the past 13 years. Dry rides are few and far between.

Here it is fitted to a couple of bikes with a Conti Navigator on the front.
When it's dry they are a very fast rolling tyre with good grip, but any sniff of moisture and you might as well be riding on ice. Hence why I've always matched it up to a front tyre with more tread.

I remember in my first xc race locking up both wheels and still accelerating whilst going downhill using these tyres.

Didn't put me off using them in the right conditions though.

  :D

I tell you what I'm not rushing to buy them now, may be a bit pointless!! I was really wanting something like a Halo Twin Rail but a lighter alternative, not sure if these fit the bill or not.

I used these on the rear a lot for racing in dry to tacky (not pebbly) conditions. They're fast, light, and work really well.

I also found them to wear a bit quickly, at which point they don't do so well in the woods.
