Computer prob-File segment xxxxxx is unreadable

You could copy your disk with something like Norton Ghost to save the hassle of a reinstall, if things were otherwise running sweet. This is a nice shortcut that also allows you to come back later and repair a copy of your bad drive so you are not risking further degradation of your data or total 'loss' with a complete failure.

what is norton ghost? im interested

and 2 hd's sounds like a great idea, or more (with less storage, rather than fewer with more storage)

Ghost allows to create an image of your drive for recovery purposes or to clone your drive to a new one, it also does backups I think. Very handy if you are just replacing a small drive with a larger one but I don't know how useful it would be with an unbootable system.

does it go over exactly the same?
how does it work, you make a ghost, on a disc? or with a cable? (to the new drive?)

Yep, exact clone, I've only used it to clone drives so the normal routine is to add the new drive as a secondary, install Ghost and set the task up, the PC then reboots to a DOS session and clones the disk. PC reboots and you can then shut it down and swap the disks so the new disk becomes the boot disk and you are done.

The OP still has a booting system.

Ghost and similar utils will give you a carbon copy of your drive, so you can mess around at leisure to get your OS up and happy again, without risking further physical damage.

I can make any XP, Vista partition bootable again manually in a couple of minutes, but I am not there with Win 7 as I have not yet needed to get so down and dirty with it!

As soon as your drive is playing up get a bigger drive and CLONE it!

Unless you are fastidious in backing up regularly.

:)

Had a few probs with a virus a few months ago..thought I sorted it but a week later comp crashed..had'nt backed up anything..good job the repair shop saved all my files and in the end got it working again..only had it back again the last few weeks..and made sure i bought an external drive and copied everything..
