Compatibility of XT 739 V-Brake levers with canti's?

Anyone had experience of using XT 737 V-Brake levers with Shimano canti's? Just wondering if these would work ok?

Thanks for any advice given!

Just don't.

People *have*... but they just don't work right, and yes, I have tried 739 levers with Diacomp 987s.

Re:

I acquired a bike the other way round, ST M071 levers, 1991 DX, but on front there was m600 v brakes as no hanger with suspension forks. Rear was correct with BR-m650s Deore DX canti. Also fitted was a travel adjuster, ay Caramba. Deals in the difference in cable pulls and where the mechanical advantage is ?

So I guess the opposite is true for v levers with canti brakes, and you reverse it.

If you take the spacers out of the roller cam, they work just fine.
yeah, but you also take them out for V-brakes by design.

If you have them try them, see if you like it. From memory that still gives you a naff Canti brake lever, it will be like having a cheap brake on it.
Hard and unmodulating, they still don't have the correct pull too much cable. But if you like that, rather than a soft, powerful easily modulated brake, then go for it.

otherwise just buy some Shimano servowave DX/XT/XTR canti levers.

I used v levers with canti brakes a few times, no problem. v levers pull more cable so they 'bite' quicker or you can set your pads a bit further away from the rim i guess.

Those that say don't do it - I am genuinely curious why not, whats the problem?

Re:

As I edited a I've, you get a solid feeling brake. All the brake power needs to come from your grip and not the lever. You get a firm feel, which many people think as a good brake, it's not and probably why many think canti brakes as shite.
Get a nice soft, controllable setup with easily delivered power.
some may call this spongy, but it the proper setup for decent brakes.
It's a different spongy to really cheap flexible brakes, which I think is where they think spongy is bad...

If the stays are not bending with ease, then there is something wrong with your setup ;-)

V-brake and cantilever = Car brake pedal rock solid

Cantilever and V-brake lever = Car brake pedal straight to the floor

The pivot points of the levers themselves are placed specifically to provide the 'right' amount of pull and leverage.

You can use devices to change that pull, Travel Agents are still around, these increase the leverage - like using a tree to multiply the the pull of a rope when getting you drunk mate out of a ditch.

You can use older Shimano levers from the 3 years of those big nylon STI from the 300LX to Deore LX M550 range; their pivots are just in the right place to provide a pretty decent amount cable pull/ leverage without any spongyness or wooden feeling
