Clunker Schwinn DX 1941 FINISHED page 8

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

I thought about this myself because the more I search for these S2 rims in good condition and Union brakes in whatever condition, the more I realise it will be very ard or very very expensive to build such a wheelset.
So I mihgt go for the Araya's with Suzue hubs and Dia Compe canti's.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

I would have to agree...check this union front out..it was poorly listed and still sold for $462! (NOS though..)

I managed to get one for under $100 but it needs some spit and polish.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

That is very kind of you :)
I solved the problem by buying a set of Araya 7x with Suzue hubs in great condition for a great price.
It has a 6 speed cog and what looks like original tires, so I'm happy!

Cool rims, next step get yourself a 13/16 solid rod for a seat post. Thats all the Koski's did. Sorry, don't know the metric equivalent but I am sure google does. Also re assess your choice of Wald bars. They are cheap and will bend with any type of use. Can't imagine Gary used them for any length of time. Plenty of vintage BMX bars to be found like VDC etc. or get yourself some old motorcycle bars from bitd. Good luck brazing the canti mounts on. Curious to see what is cheaper in the long run, proper drums or getting canti mounts welded up to frame and fork and finding some Mavic brakes.

All strictly my opinion and I certainly appreciate the diversity of a good klunker build. Have fun, don't stop.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

Also, might think about a different fork. Don't think I have ever seen canti mounts welded to a flat fork like that. I am sure someone will prove me wrong. Think Tange TX 1200 or the like. Other option if you are set on that fork might be some Schwinn clamp on canti brakes. They show up on ebay every blue moon. You will need the type for a flat fork. They kinda look like Moots mounts but for a flat bladed fork.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

Cheers mate for your good advice!
I will use canti fork mounts instead of brazing them on.
And found some nice period correct Dia Compe canti's.
I did found your tip about the seatpost on Alans site, he used ansolid alloy one.
And my handlebars will be some Honda from the days.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

Right on!

Most of the stuff I ramble is keeping things era correct to pre 1980 which is my own timeline for a klunker build. On my 41 DX, I cut corners and regret it still. Currently knee deep in a 37 Schwinn C klunker that is being done with the limitation of the aforementioned date.

Tires would be Uniroyal nobbies:

Or Snakebellies:

Neither of which I would ride on being over 30 years old, brittle, and expensive. There are a few cheap snakebelly repops out there to be found for riding. Save the originals for the photo shoot.

Re: Schwinn DX '40 Clunker Gary replica

What canti's would you recommend?
I see some nice Dia's on Ebay, but can't track the correct type for this erea.
