A few more pix. After a dry 2 months it's raining again here.

early 80's version, campy copy components. Suntour RD. A few years before the respray.

the chrome chainstay guard goes well with the polished components.

Wheelsmith built wheels, Campy NR small flange hubs. I polished them with a dremel tool.

the lug outlining came out perhaps a bit heavy but I'm still pleased with my 1st time painting them. Campy BBs can be confusing. I quickly learned the Chorus BB I had doesn't work with a NR. The TA and Sugino spindles don't work either. Late production NR Strada cranks take a longer spindle. There thin cups and thick cups. It took me several weeks to sort the proper BB out.

The finishing touch were the beautiful repro hoods. Far better than the cheap black ones, the originals were a mess.

They had a shop in Stoke-on-Trent, which is where Brian Rourke is based.

I suspect Clive Stuart was a bike shop who sold their own branded frames which were built by various local framebuilders.

Brian was the manager of the Stoke shop and he started his own business when CS went bust. The Stoke CS frames were built over the shop by Roger Kowalski and the London area ones by Bill Gray. However, I think this only refers to the 'good' ones, the 'ordinary/stock' ones were probably obtained from 'jobbing' builders. Early team bikes were Red but they later changed to the all-Yellow colour scheme which, to me, is the only 'proper' colour to have for a CS. I even ordered frame from Dave Russell as a CS replica! This may also have been built by Bill Gray as he did quite a bit of work for Dave. There's a lot of 'stories' surrounding the CS business but I reckon most of it was just rumour-mongering in the trade, jealous of their success, marketing and low prices.

Here is a hazy view of me in 1970 on the DS/CS machine, emulating the advert - but in a 4-up team TT - through the middle of Aylesbury! Pornstar moustaches were popular then..................... :roll:

I've still got the jersey (it just about fits) and my hair had colour in those days.

Great story and photo - I can't imagine time trialling through Aylesbury town centre ever. I have to say your team is showing a terrible lack of discipline there though .

Yes, I had to give them a damn good spanking at the finish, naughty boys!

Here are some CS images taken from International Cycle Sport magazines of the period.

In the first are Reg Smith and George Drewell in 1968 riding the dark red flamboyant team bikes with the original jerseys, yellow with black band. Hugh Porter in the foreground on his purple Condor.

Next is Reg Barnett at the Easter Herne Hill track meeting riding against some continental pros and Colin Lewis. Note the chrome head lugs. One of the Bird brothers (not sure which) is holding Reg while Colin has Mike Shea supporting him.

The third photo is Geoff Wiles in the Isle of Wight 3-day in 1970 on his yellow team bike with the later yellow with black sleeves jersey. He is following race leader Les West on his equally iconic orange and blue Holdsworth.

How bikes used to shine in those days!
