Strip a frame, let it rust naturally or give it a hand then coat in marine varnish.

My neighbour makes furniture from oil drums and old baths the same way

Loving that finish, how was that established?

Sorry, missed this question.

It was taken back to bare steel, polished up to 800 grit wet & dry paper then given a forced patina (my own blend of chemicals) followed by a lacquer of choice.

Nearly 2 full years on and it's still completely stable and (additional) rust free.
