Sorry! Those cranks will chip quicker than a quick chunky chipper chipping chunky cheap chips.

A bit of oven treatment may help but the alu has to be medically clean or the paint will lift of first scuff - from someone who nose the knows

Yeah, probably.... they have been cut back with a few grades of wet & dry in an attempt to get through the anodised top layer so that the acid etch can have a go at the raw aluminium.

Anyho...it’s an easy job to whip them off and give a re-spray at the end of the year.... :D

Coming together really nicely - looks like your into the home straight now, a few more jobs and you'll be finished

Yeah but Mrs Peachy says she doesn’t like power tools being used in the house as A Noise - Annoys :D

Silly buggers....

Anyway...... LGF does make a valid point... namely that if you don’t prepare properly, you may as well wrap the crankset in tissues paper!

So I wouldn’t want anyone thinking “oh! Black acid etch! All my detailing problems are solved!” Unfortunately it’s not that easy... so what are the options?

1. Buy NOS from California at a hugely inflated price with ridiculous import charges etc...
2. Have them professionally stripped of the anodised layer, polished, then re-anodised black. (Very expensive)
3. Black powder coat, not a bad solution, but the stickers won’t like adhering to them and only marginally tougher than paint.
4. Clean properly, cut through the Anodised layer with 180grit and spray with the best spray can acid etch that you’ve used in thirty years of finishing models and prototypes for a living ;)
5. Go rat bike style and just maintain/service your bike properly and enjoy riding it! :D

Any of the above will get you to a place you want to be with your own build.

Oh! One last option, bin the lot and go buy a brand new bike.....

I would have just left them polished...

Well that’s interesting :|

Anyway.

Scarlett wanted to do a bit more colouring in, so who am I to stop her?

This pair of derailleurs, RD-M550 & FD-M550 are both stamped late 1990 have been stripped, cleaned and serviced, now just need the scratches touching up. Yes I know this won’t pass muster in a concourse competition, but for this fun build I think they look fine.... :D

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

Very nice work. Just one comment that maybe useful for the Dof E award, would they look for things being fitted to the correct torque using a torque wrench? Thinking about the cassette lockring, and the stem, bars etc? I very rarely use one myself, only when fitting carbon parts or suspension fittings but wondered if it might improve the 'evidence' side of fitting things correctly? Not meant as a criticism as like I said I wouldn't use one myself on a build like this but just thinking what they might be looking for.
