Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project finished pg11

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

Next job was to re-cut the BB frame thread.
This had been appropriately masked, but they always get a bit of a bashing from sandblasting etc, so a quick run through with an English BB thread tap is easy enough and makes the installation of the BB child’s play…literally!

Slight cheat here as I do want her build to be good but economical, so although a UN55 isn’t date correct, it is a cheap but sound unit and arguably designed for just this sort of replacement.

It didn’t take her long to get that sorted, then onto the Zoom stem… again a reletavly cost effective new unit that basically hasn’t changed since 1991, and although not cat correct for the Shaman, the original Zoom did appear on the top of the range Antaeus… No instruction required here, she just got on with it!

So, I went to make us a brew, Scarlett asked me as I left “Whats next?” I replied the flat black handlebar in its own long clear bag.
I came back to find her setting up….. a NOS unused immaculate double butted Tange prestige chromo!!!!!!!!

This was replaced by yours truly a little later on with the Zoom alloy bar that had been bought for the job…

She wanted to fit one last bit before going in for tea, so she quickly fitted the Elite bottle cage I sprayed up in the same yellow as the graphic trim.

And now we can eat........

Really coming on nicely, nice to see the young lady putting some practical work into her project, way too often in engineering we see girls with all the gear but no idea

Cheers guys….

She’s certainly fun to have around in the workshop! Although I suspect she’s more looking forward to some restoration and detailing we have planned for the cranks, pedals and original saddle.

But for now she’s had a go at the FC-M550 cranks (circa 1990) and a set of M570 V-brakes from 2000 that are being treated to an overnight bath in Evapo-rust to help free up the springs & shafts.

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

So, after the cleaning comes some fun stuff… colouring in!!!!! :D :D :D :D

I wanted Scarlett to realise that reaching for NOS stuff on ebay is expensive and actually, shouldn’t be the first port of call if it can be helped, we should always attempt to restore or renovate what we have first. ;)

These LX V-brakes came from one of our Lotus bikes, and although weren’t what I wanted for those builds, they are certainly worth cleaning and servicing. One thing that had happened to them in the past that needed sorting were the mild steel parallel arms, these had some surface rust under the black paint, so they spent a couple of nights in evaporust, then got a proper clean…. Now they just need touching up with some of Jimmy’s “Airfix” paint. :)

Then on to the M550 crankset, reasonable condition, but a bit rough and the Shimano Deore graphics had long gone…. What to do? Well after a scrub/de-grease/rub down, we’re going to spray them with black etch filler primer, apply some aftermarket white decals then a coat of clear satin/matt acrylic.

Re: Father & Daughter Claud Butler Shaman Silver DofE project

Sorry! Those cranks will chip quicker than a quick chunky chipper chipping chunky cheap chips.

A bit of oven treatment may help but the alu has to be medically clean or the paint will lift of first scuff - from someone who nose the knows
