I just wanted to add that I recently picked up a pre-ww2 French with full 531 (every tube is stamped) rando with the same chain stay detail as bduc61's.

I will be watching this build closely. Looks fantastic!

I suspect that you are correct with the chainstays being Vitus. I have seen a number of various manufacturers from this time that have these stays, and most (if not all) seem to have French origin.

I don't have this bike in my possession quite yet, but I have confirmed that all the tubes are stamped 531 other than the chainstays. Seat stays are stamped 531 for sure.
