Are the dropping chain stays a styling thing or a technical thing?

Open was first with those chainstays, to combine wider tyres with low q factor cranks I think it is?

Dropped stays became the thing with 29er hardtail MTBs. Getting big rubber in whilst keeping the wheelbase as short as possible.

It's a lovely bike (for a modern one).
I personally like to see cassettes smaller than rotors however.
I guess I've become an old fart.

What chain lube is that?
