Gotcha, I am definitely no engineer so I'll accept the answer, however BMW are umpteen BHP motorcycles and even a super fit human can barely register 0.5 BHP

Right. But look at the torque (i.e. load) down the driveshaft. At that stage humans start putting in similar forces.
