Caygill Custom Columbus

Ok... here we go. Its finished as far as i can take it. Ideally i'd like a different seatpost and a more period correct bar and stem, but the position on the bike is spot on and i like the more modern twist. The bike is up for sale soon regretably as there are too many projects in the garage. Its the building them that i like anyway.

So here it is:

Rode the bike to work today- goes like a rocket. Mixture of road and dusty bridleway for 4 miles and was in the big ring all the way :)

Weighed it on our trusty park bike weigh thingy- a smidge over 24lbs with rubbish plastic pedals. Pretty good i thought without really trying!

NEW HOME ALERT!

I have just unpacked one of the best wrapped frames I have ever been sent, nice one Rich.

I cannot tell you what a stunning frame this is, the workmanship is equal to anything I have seen or own, beautiful.

Right, before some of you have heart failure at the thought of SRAM 2 x 10 set ups, this is going to be a trad, early 90's build using DX or XT or both.

I already have XT Thumbies (7 speed) some very nice DX wheels I built up a while ago and a few other bits and bobs, but what I have no idea about are decent canti's. So either I fit some modern cx canti's, like the ones I have on my Rourke, which are as powerful as anything I have ever experienced, or I fit some effective age related stuff.

First job will be new decals, after that we go headset hunting, 1 1/8th ahead.

EDIT: Just had a nice chat with Scott Caygill, they still make steel frames at the shop, although not too many mtb's these days.

Decals are now on order, exactly the same as the ones that came off.

It's great to see its gone to a good home.

It would never have been used properly by me, and truth be told, was a tad small. Good luck with the build!

Rich

Decals applied, headset fitted and on its wheels.

Not the tyres, bars or stem I will be using, but it gives an idea of what it will look like.

Spin off your own build thread and link back to this. Means I'll not have to read it all again. Mist it the first time and by the way the original forks where mag20's but with as later crown and brace from the mag21 series.

That headset does look nice.
Xtr cantis if you can get them. Correct for the assumed circa 92/93 frame as well

Looks fab with the decals the headset  Are the forks maybe a bit long? might be worth measuring up.
