Hi y'all,,,, the front suspension has collapsed on my carrera, as above year. Were these forks elastomer, or steel spring? Where will I get new spring media for it? I have asked Halfords ("A wot? Wots an elastomer?). Ahhh. Hard work. They are the forks as on this ebay bike.

Anyone on here got any, or advice, ('cept 'skip it!'). As the old nail is still in pretty good shape. Or sell me some bits if you have them? Thanx folks!!

fit better forks - RS Quadra or something from RST

lots about in the for sale section - measure the steerer length first though

LGF is right. Functional forks start at £30 here. Manitou SX seem to go for low money, but work well. Marzocchi Z3 are a favourite as they are excellent, easy to service and still supported with spares.

Re:

Agree with the above, you can buy better forks for less then it'll cost to fix yours. From memory yours are the same as were fitted to Saracens around that time and were not well regarded.

Re:

If it's the same as the one in the picture it's threadless and almost certainly 1 and 1/8", but probably best to measure it and make sure. 1" is 25.4 mm and 1 1/8" is 28.6mm in new money. :D

As for length, as long or longer than the existing one, you can always cut it down, or use spacers.

Also, have you considered rigid forks? If you're mainly road riding, or gentle trails, tow paths etc. a set of rigid forks will be lighter and zero maintenance. :D

Rigid, eh? I have a pair of 1990 of Cannondale peppperoni's in the garage. Threaded. But it may be doable. If not, a cheap set of boingers and a pipe cutter, lol! Cheers.
