I know this is not going to get retro bike of the year but ive been lucky or unlucky enough to acquire a carrera quattro professional that to my untrained eye seems to be 90-95% original, the xt crankset has been repmaced with a rx100 one and its now sporting trek grips, but shifters derailleurs and cassette and hubs are xt, brakes are slr cantilever, flexistem works as it should, panaracer smoke tyres, with a clean up and a service it should be ready to ride again

Commonly raided for the black XT group, so yes you’ve done well there to find one with most of it present. Should clean up nicely

Nope 1992 definitely happened!
My educated guess is 1991. As most bike manufacturers had switched over to Shimano STI’s with combined brake levers and under-handlebar push-push shifters. My guess is that Carrera probably got hold of the thumbies and brake levers for next to nothing and they were still super popular as the push-push STI shifters weren’t not great or that reliable...
That should clean up lovely. Don’t stress over the gloss paint, that should come off without damaging the original paint. But do remember that patina/marks are all part of the bikes story and should be embraced, otherwise if were too precious we’ll never ride them!
