Carbon retro?

I've had the pleasure of meeting Merckx when he came to London to watch the football.

In the late 90's i went to the opening of a new bike shop in Stockholm . Somehow they got him in for that day and he was standing in the corner like a duck out of water. He just quietly stood there and struck me as being a bit shy, but he seemed to be happy enough doing that and signing stuff. Maybe if i had a bottle of port on me(i think that was his thing back in the day) he might have been a bit more animated. I had a cycling cap which he signed, but i lost the flippin' thing many moons ago.

I'd trust Merckx over just about anyone to come up with top end steel, history has proved that and then some
Empirical vs Theoretical...šŸ¤ vsšŸ„ø

Harnessing both has brought humanity a very long way,
although ultimately it looks like we are unable to restrain ourselves to live within our resourcesšŸ˜Ŗ

Merckx was pretty well on when I met him in London. He was on the beer, and on quite good form. He's become more popular in Belgium over the years as he's mellowed. Voted 3rd most famous Belgian in 2022 (the other two are dead!)

Carbon shouldnā€™t degrade with time. Resins degrade in UV, however, so anything in bare carbon shouldnā€™t be left in the sunlight šŸ‘
This is my understanding too.

As long as it doesnā€™t exceed it itā€™s design specs (load / shock / deflection) and is kept away from UV and heat, then I understand CF to have a very long life indeed. However, where it is bonded to other materials, the bond point can be the weakest bit. Alloy / carbon forks after a few salty winters look scary!

Impact, that is the killer. If it has been smacked hard then it is time for the bin. I canā€™t believe enduro and DH frames are made in carbon, I wouldnā€™t trust my life on one.
