Car versus machine.....ha ha ha!!!!

Seems like you could do it fairly easily. Maybe a bike with some sort of basket for the specialist tools you may/may not need to carry from time to time.

I am about to give up my commute and car maybe for one of these. Mrs hm will still drive the 4x4 so not quite your situation.

Bloody hell i can't believe how much that C90 is going for

Give it a go Kaz, you can always get another car at a later date/winter if needed :)

I have 2 cars, one motor scooter and 15 bikes. I do my commute per bike as often as I can. 2 years ago I did around 5000km on the bikes. But I would not want do give away my cars. They're just so much better in getting you quickly to anywhere. And of course my 2 weeks shoping tour, I'd have to go to the shops every 4 days if I had to do that by bike. (3 kids do eat alot...)
And in the winter, the bike is totally out of question. I'd ruin my health with that, I am sure. I tried that, believe me.
When you're ill and still have to get somewhere, a bike is a pain, too.

(You did ask for the negative sides, did you? :D )

For getting myself around I exclusively use a bicycle, and I have on many occasions gone shopping by bike...

I've had everything from a Nespresso machine to a spare steel wheel (for a car) on the back of the bike. I ride to and from work in all weathers all year round and don't have any inclination to go back to a car.

However, for bigger shops and items, the family car (aka child taxi) does still get employed although I'm sure a trailer would be fine if it was just me. When the twins were young I had a trailer which I used to take them to nursery and then head to work. That frequently got filled with shopping.

I'd say give it a go.

I haven't owned a car for many years and sold the motorbike earlier this year. I tend to use buses for most travel beyond very local and the bike for localish. If I need to do a big shop once a month then I tend to get the bus to the town and a cab back (about £6)

For holidays or the occasional need I will hire a car. A few weeks ago I hired a 2016 Astra elite diesel from Friday morning to Monday morning from Enterprise (other car hire firms available ) for just £66 all in. I simply do not need a car all year round.

At the moment I have my fun bikes but I am considering something like a Kona Ute or Surly big dummy for the summer months and fairer winter days

As to the C90 value on that ebay link, yeah the C range has gone silly in value like most 80's vehicles we have a few fond memories of.

Re:

Some good waterproof clothes and puncture-resistant tyres will go a long way. As for groceries :

The last time I needed a car was when I had to go to Germany to pick up my Sbike. I ended up renting one. Could have done it by train TBH, but I didn't.
You'll also find that not owning a car anymore will free up a lot of money for bikes, or for working less if you are getting tired of the whole rat race (like myself)

As those of you who know me through FB too will probably now know....I caved in and got a Fiesta

On balance, I realised it's just not feasible to go completely without a car at all for someone like me, and although I hate to admit it, I absolutely adore driving too. But based on the ingenuity and ideas you have all shared, I'm determined to start using a car a lot less in the summer, and at least give it a go, perhaps having a car free week once a month?
