I recently (well last year) upgraded the system in my 2006 WRX. I replaced the headunit with a Sony XAV-AX100 unit that runs both android auto and Apple carplay. I now plug my phone into a connector in the glovebox and get. Phone, Music (both local and net streaming apps like spotify), Sat nav and comms apps like messenger, texts and whatsapp on the headunit with full voice control. My unit is mechless and only has a built in Tuner (will also play off USB) but the AX200 has a CD too.
Can't recommend it highly enough functionality wise and it sounds great. I went for the Sony in my Subaru as it has a rotary volume control, home and physical track skip buttons. I also have a JVC unit in my truck and that has only volume up down and home buttons so is less friendly in cars without steering controls, it does however have twin USB inputs so a stick and phone or 2 phones can connect at once.
Add that to some decent (I used Focal) components in the front doors and you'll have a good start.
