Excuse a noob question, but why the aversion to using WD40 as chain oil?

it's a degreaser.
more of a Water Dispersent, WD aids in removing unwanted water(moistuer) thats what it was really intended for it does work as a degreaser but also loosens rusty parts the list is endless

Old car oil always works for me, just brush it on, and wd40 it off at the end of the week and reapply. Or alternatively use scottoil...

I have used 30 weight motor oil on my chains for many years with excellent results. I asked Joe Breeze what he uses and he told me 30 weight was his choice also. As long as you wipe all the oil off the outside of the chain after lubing, it won't attract a lot of dirt to stick to it. I also degrease and re-lube my chain about once a month.

30w sounds quite gloopy in comparison to the 5w stuff that goes in my engine. I shall see how it goes but looking for a reasonable option when it comes to getting the new chain going for the first time. :)
