Car oil as chain oil?

Wipe it on, wipe it off. Should be fine.....

I just use a quick squirt of GT85 after washing it down/or before a ride.

I have also tried molyslip spray and thats seems to work well too.

Whatever you do don't use wd 40...i walked past a child yesterday happily spraying his upturned mountainbike's chain with wd40 it made me chuckle. The whole image was perfect from the poundland sized can of wd 40 to the full suspension mountain bike that probably weighed more than the child.

Strange behaviour... Around these parts they just leave bikes until the cacophony of squeaks leave them with no option but to pedal like the clappers because packs of savage wild dogs chase them

motor oil on chains turns thick and black and gooey quickly, it is the ultimate for chainring tattoos if you want one of those.

I think heat and 8000 rpm might have more to do with that :?




Unless you can turn your cranks at 8000rpm :shock: :shock:

no its not ive tryed engine oil as i had no other in stock and it does go black and sticky and you have trouble shifting gears becous there so much stuff like mud sticking to your chain and rear casset

I use chain wax, i spray form from halfords not easily washed off

In my youth my dad always had an oil can with Castrol GTX
worked perfectly for years.

I now use a can of spray oil/grease.

I really don't think it makes much difference as long as you use some
sort of lube ... oo er missus !

I agree. Tony Oliver always used to recommend it in his book. He just used to go to the bin in a garage and use the dregs left at the bottom of a discarded bottle when touring...

I do agree with it picking up muck, but then the same applies to any lube if not wiped from the outside of a chain. Oiling is for the inside of the chain, specifically the link pins and rollers.
