It is salient to note that the abolition of the death penalty is nothing to do with Human Rights.
It won't work a a deterrent, but it prevents re offending.
The death penalty still exists in law for treason, and arson in a naval dockyard came off the books in th late 90's, but even if it hadnt it can never be exercised because the ECHR is higher law than British statute law.
The ECHR is wonderful in protecting the human rights of people that don't respect the human rights of the innocent, and woefully impotent in protecting those morally deserving of it.
