Cannondale F questions

Picked up a nice Cannondale today which is a caad4 model and I assume maybe a F700.

Can anyone tell me the year and model?

It needs a good clean and polish but some nice bits for sure. Fork holds air and moves smoothly.

Few bits I’m unsure about how to build. Was thinking Racelines , and XTR mechs , shifters etc but now thinking I’ll keep the avid brakes , and still go XTR for rest. The brakes are a little dull but can sort that out.

Any idea if chainset is high end at all?

I’m thinking that the chainset needs polishing up silver or maybe anodising black again if it’s a decent one.

Wheels are Crossmax and are in good nick. No cracks which is important thing.

I’ll do a proper build thread once I’m sorted with knowing the first few questions and have time to take it apart and start

I'm guessing 1999 or so going by the disc tabs and decals.
Try having a look on vintagecannondale.com, they have all the Catalogues there.
I wouldn't mind something like this myself, great XC mile muncher.

Re:

I was guessing around 98-2000 due to disc mounts and M750 9 speed. But would like to know for sure

All the models seem very similar around that age. Need a Cannondale expert to tell me for sure

Re:

I think the cranks are decent, at some point I seem to recall reading or owning a set of coda cranks that required an xtr v1 splined bb. Iirc they were also lighter than the xtr cranks.

I was on holiday once and saw someone on one of these, I think it was an f900 and the paint job was blue to turquoise to white fade. I wanted it so badly as it reminded me of my first proper mtb, a 531 framed raleigh cajun. To this day only ever seen one of either.

Re:

To be honest I thought yesterday the BB looked like a XTR from the side. So that’s probably correct. I imagine it’s decent as rest of bike is good spec.

Re:

You should be able to decipher the serial number to date it.
They offered that paint scheme on a couple of bikes around then, the F700 and the F3000 iirc, probably both the same frame, just different spec components/shock.

Re:

Cool I’ll find the serial today and post it up.

I’m hoping I get some time today to tidy it up a bit.

First year of the CAAD4 was 1999. It doesn't have a Model number, so it was either a warranty or bought as a frame only.

Bikes in Team blue:
1999:
F3000
F700 - But was CAAD3

2000:
F800 - but was also CAAD3
F2000Sl was CAAD5/disc only

The parts kind of match the 2000 F3000SL, but with a replacement frame maybe

Re:

Thanks for info

The guy I got it from says they bought it new in around 2000 for his son but wasn’t used much and then was put away and hasn’t moved.

He said he thought it was purchased as a complete bike but was a custom build. So I’m guessing frame only so that kind of makes sense.

Any way to tell dates/ model on these from the serial?

Re:

The serial number is the key to finding out what year cannondale you have. Once finding out the year, cross reference with the correct catalog to find out which model you have. Determine with the color (USA and Europe have different colors) and parts in the catalog. Remember, a bicycle can be made the year before for the following year. “example” A 1987 could be made in late 86 for the 87 year

The head badge dates it between 1997 and 1999. I believe those double down tube graphics were used in 1999. I'm going with a 1999 F3000. A lovely bike.
