Can you put spd pedals on vintage bike?

But Watch out for French threads!Caught me out recently when I was trying to replace pedals on a Vitus.

Actually, you may have problems threading a shimano's SPD or other Japanese pedals into vintage Campy cranks and maybe other Italian cranks as the threads are slightly different. The will go in but may take more force than you may be comfortable with.
 
In my humble opinion make sure the centre line (to the thread start) of your old pedals is the same as the SPD clip ons, some of the older style pedals were wider, then depending on your SPD shoe you could be rubbing the crank arm.
 
Just buy some vintage look pedals with delta style cleats, win win all-round :)
