Can chains be 'non index'... restoring charity bicycles cheaply

Basically, I know that 5 & 6 speed chains are the same size as 7 & 8 speed at 7.3mm wide (correct me if i'm wrong).

BUT are some a non index design...

I'm hoping these will work with classic 90's 7 & 8 speed mtbs for charity bicycle restoration, @ £2.50 a chain, it is a deal.

They can be, or thinking about it another way, cheap/crap chains can hinder the indexing of some gear systems.
It's a question of standards to be honest. It may bug you, but does it bug the end user? (it shouldn't)

I would guess it would mean lack of profiling and twist-ability for making it easier for the chain to get on and off cogs.

Some of the chinese chains seemed to have lasted quite well
