For Sale Campagnolo Zonda 16R wheels NOS

New old stock the rare Zonda 16R wheelset for 8 speed cassettes. I was saving these to use on a Bianchi Superissimo restoration but they're really too good for it (the frame would need to be repainted to justify it).

For those of you who like their bikes decked out with the freshest of bling this is as good as it gets.

Are these the same as Gipiemme Tecno 416? Are the rims the same extrusion?

Yes AFAIK, it's the same rim. Gipiemme supplied the 416 rim to Campagnolo who then produced the Shamal/Vento/Zonda wheelsets from it.

Yes, they're very well regarded. Hard to find a second hand pair of fair condition Gipiemme 416 for less than £500. Personally I really like their 5 spoke offerings.

Early adopters of Carbon Fiber in wheels, aluminium spokes, bonding etc they clearly have issues being relevant these days and carry a largely generic product range and some old extrusions. Gipiemme tecno 416 were fast wheels but what let them down was hub quality VS Campagnolo wheelsets with the same rim.

I guess they lost a few key members, in some cultures, the company would have a "master engineer" who creates magic, but when he leaves or is lost, it all goes downhill. They also may have gotten beaten by Shimanos dominance. Interesting what you say about the quality, poor quality at that level of production is sometimes a sign of poor management and wrong focus, and is often unrelated to level of innovation which can still be world class.

To be fair to Gipiemne although they were certainly innovators in rim design, Campagnolo had 30 years experience in hub design before they started manufacturing. A sealed bearing hubset was always going to be a big ask from scratch. I often wonder if they had just bought in Taiwan made sealed hubs (which also had problems, but better seals) where they could have been now. Ironically the Gipiemme 416 are still sought after on eBay fetching £5-600 for good used sets.
