Campagnolo spaced, Shimano splined 8 speed cassette

Hey folks,

I've been looking for a solution to my problem:

I have a full 8-speed Campagnolo groupset which I want to use on a Nishiki frameset I just bought via eBay. The problem is that I only have wheelsets with Shimano hubs. As far as I know 8 speed Shimano and 8 speed Campagnolo don't have the same spacing. Also the splines on the freehub body are different.

Is there any option on Shimano splined but Campagnolo spaced cassettes? I know Marchisio did some, but the only shop I know doesn't have anymore in stock.

You'll need to dismantle a cassette, some were bolted, I think some SRAM cassettes still are - allowing you to then make you own.

But then Campagnolo is 5mm with Shimano at 4.8mm

I'd lob a standard Shimano cassette wheel in and run it just to see how it works. I'm sure I ran something like this a while ago. There may be enough slack in the system to run that 1.4mm difference.

You can buy Campag spaced cassettes with Shimano splines but these are made up as legrandfomage explains above.

I have done it myself a few times with different configurations and now hang on to old worn cassettes to use the spacers for just this application. It works well but some configurations can be a little more fiddly to set up at each end of the range due to the slight differences.

Sheldon Brown has a very helpful table showing all the dimensions you need which can be used to work out what you need to produce a suitable cassette.

Re:

your easiest option is to use a shimano 7 speed cassette and have one blank click on the ergos.

shimano 7 speed and campag 8 speed are spaced the same at 5mm pitch

Correct me if I'm wrong but in order to run a Shimano cassette with Campag spacing I would need 3.2mm spacers right? According to Sheldon Browns crib sheet that would give me the 5.0mm spacing I need.
Is there a shop where they sell those? Otherwise I will have to make them myself..

I had a think back to how I did this the last time I needed too (which was a while ago) and I used Shimano 8 speed cogs with Camapg 8 speed 3.1mm spacers which worked fine, yes Ideally 3.2mm spacers would be better but the 0.1mm per cog error that was left seemed allowable, from memory it was a little more fiddly to set but nothing major.

Luckily I wrote down what I did but it took a while to find, I used standard Shimano cogs (which were riveted together so I had to drill the heads out), spacers from a Veloce 8 speed cassette and 1st series Veloce 8 speed brifters.

I found a really simple solution to my problem: The Jtek Shiftmate 1.

I will try it out and report after I used it a bit.

Thanks for all the replys and kind advices!
