Campagnolo early Gran Sport derailleur setup

Re:

Yes. Both from Portugal. No idea how old they are but they were immaculate. You just might need to lube the freewheel!

Funny you should mention that......I have a gold block and chain on my watch list from that seller.

Is this what you have bought or another block / chain

Shaun

Hi Shaun. That's the one! Mine are in excellent condition with no storage marks on the cogs. Freewheel seems to be lubricated, but I'll doublecheck that! Best wishes

A spare hour and a bit more tinkering. Playing with the 22-14 now I have a 112 campagnolo bb and the chain set fitted. 42/52 rings. Chain length set on large to large, I can just pull two links into a vee. This setup gives me a chain like a washing line on 42/14, and not a lot better 1/2 way up the block. I can improve things a bit by slackening the main pivot bolt and rotating the body anticlockwise to put a bit more tension on before nipping it up. Same as tightening the B screw on a modern Shimano mech. Shifting totally cross chained large to large pulls the mech forwards again and undoes this adjustment. Trouble is, I am not convinced that with this gearing the bike will be fit for what at actually want to do. I.E. bugger off to Italy and climb up bloody great hills on it. So as an experiment, I put a 28/14 freewheel on to see how badly it would cope. Pretty awful really. Changing from 14 to the next cog is horrible, it either spits the chain up two cogs or tries to jam up. 28/52 without tearing the mech off gives you a washing line at 14/42. Am I asking too much of the little gran sport mech? Will an early 70s NR be more suited to what I am trying to do? Just to cheer myself up a bit - now I have a functioning front brake, I did screw some pedals on and rode up and down the lane. I think it will be quite a nice bike when I get it sorted!

Have you thought about one of the Campag Rally mechs?

The Rear mech you have copes really well with 50/48 up front .........

Re:

I have seen them - much longer cage, which is the answer really isn't it. Not rocket science - large range of gears = long cage mech to cope.
I might try one. I get by with 42/26 as my lowest on a nice light late 90s bike.

Re:

I have one of these on my Flyer. They are really very smooth changers, noiseless I find on the way down, a little rougher on the way up to the big cog and not suit as smooth. As Shaun says they are not good on the bigger cogs! Bullet proof build though all the same and they look terrific.
