Campag compatability question

I'm just planning long-term for my next project to come up with a decent retro/modern mix for my 653 Cougar.

I've got a lovely pair of Ambrosio Excellence wheels which will suit the build but unfortunately they only run 8speed. Having looked at solutions with companies such as Highpath Engineering to increase the number of sprockets on my cassette, I can help but feeling I'm better sticking with 8.

I was going to transfer most of a 1993 Campag Athena group across from the bike I've currently got setup on my turbo-trainer but can't help but feel the groupset is a bit tired and probably needs something better.

Instead of taking my time and waiting for the correct bits and pieces to come up for sale either on here or on eBay, I've now thought am I better going for either new or fairly recent 10speed Centaur. Can modern Campagnolo kit be setup to run smoothly (indexing all working etc) with 8speed? I'm guessing I'd still have compatability issues with getting sprockets to fit as I believe they've changed the spline patterns since the 8speed Exa-Drive.

Other option is obviously getting rear wheel rebuilt with a newer hub for better 9/10spd compatability.

No rush in completing project, I'm thinking probably a winter 11/12 project to be ready for spring next year.

I just would like to know a definitve answer as I'm driving myself loopy trying to work out best strategy. I can see the finished build in my mind's eye but going from that to reality is something else.

I like riding 8 speed. Unless your racing seriously its not really worth going to 10 speed - all you get is quicker shifts and more fine control of stroke power and cadence. 10 speed is supposed to wear much faster than 8, because of the narrower chain and cassette teeth.

The Athena is a lovely groupset too! Its going to probably end up the same weight as 10 speed Centaur or even Chorus because of the smaller cassette.

So my advice - buy another bike with the £250 odd you would pay for a new 10 speed group and keep riding the 8 speed!

I'm afraid the freehub spline pattern is different between 8 and 9/10/11 speed so if you want to upgrade to 10 speed, then a new hub is in order.

You need a 10 speed freehub and possibly to redish the wheel
Either Sheldon brown or campyforum will tell you.

Found a local wheelbuilder on Gumtree who says for £31 he will strip the old rear wheel and rebuild onto a 10speed fitting hub (new spokes too obviously).

Just need to source a suitable hub now, thinking probably an Ambrosio that will take modern 10/11 Campag.
