In theory no but it often works ok. Look at the CTC site and search for Shimergo for all the options. Or try Sheldon Brown but he is pessimistic. I mix all sorts as I like Campag levers but Shimano type hubs are cheaper and more widely availible.
Contrary to popular belief I find a bit of wear in the system helps no end.

I have used the combo with Campagnolo derailleur for a while... you get the all 9 speed range, the shifting is not super smooth (better with shimano chain, than campag) and there is a bit of grinding at the extremes of the cassette. I then invested in a shiftmate and it improved significantly... 35 pounds, as I recall

I never got it to work properly - but never tried the various "adapter" solutions out there.
