cable operated hydraulic disc brakes anyone?

My mate who has the Hope v-twin unit says the problem with cabled discs is the overall feel is spongy and are not suited to winter riding as well as a hydraulic unit and are not as reliable over a period of time. The only reason people want cable is to use their current shifter and lever combination with the better of a hydraulic system.
